In Memory of
Shirley Agnos
"Shirley Agnos, a lifelong advocate for civic engagement and community service, passed away in Sun City on February 12, 2025, at the age of 86.
Born in Lima, Ohio, Shirley moved to Arizona with her husband Tom in 1961. Both fell in love with desert living and dedicated themselves to serving the community. Shirley was instrumental in the founding of Arizona Town Hall and served as the organization’s second president. For more than four decades, until her retirement in 2006, Shirley played a pivotal role in shaping Arizona's civic discourse. Through her leadership and firm belief in the power of collaborative action, Arizona Town Hall became a model for constructive, nonpartisan dialogue, helping Arizonans throughout the state engage in meaningful discussions on critical state issues including water policy, transportation, health care, economic development, education, and criminal/juvenile justice.
Beyond her professional achievements, Shirley was a mentor to many and a passionate advocate for community engagement. She was a life member of Soroptimist International of Phoenix, a professional women's service organization, where she served in many capacities including club president and worked to support and uplift women. In addition to her civic contributions, Shirley served on multiple community boards including Sun Health Foundation, ASU West, Camelback Community Bank, and Tumbleweed, a facility for runaway youth that she was instrumental in founding.
Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas Agnos, a former Sheriff of Maricopa County and Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Phoenix. They loved to play golf, travel, spend time with friends and family, and escape to their summer home in Plumas County, CA. Beyond golfing, Shirley loved playing the piano, painting with watercolors, hosting gatherings in her beautiful Sun City West home, and baking her “famous” Viennese brownies.
Shirley was more than a leader; she was a living Rolodex of Arizona's engaged citizenry, a loyal friend to many, and a steadfast advocate for consensus building. Her influence extended far beyond Arizona Town Hall – she left an indelible mark on Arizona and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held on April 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The University Club in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring her legacy may be made to Arizona Town Hall, Soroptimist International of Phoenix, or a charity of your choice." - Dignity Memorial Obituary
